What Is a Pleural Effusion — and Why Does It Need to Be Drained?
A pleural effusion is excess fluid that collects between your lung and the wall of your chest. When this fluid builds up, it compresses your lung and makes breathing increasingly difficult. You may feel shortness of breath, heaviness in your chest, or fatigue that worsens as fluid accumulates.
In patients with cancer or certain chronic conditions, fluid tends to return quickly after drainage. The Aspira Tunneled Pleural Catheter was designed specifically for this — a small, flexible catheter placed permanently in your chest that lets you drain fluid at home without repeated clinic visits.
Most patients drain 2–3 times per week. Each session takes 10–15 minutes and removes enough fluid to significantly improve breathing comfort for several days.

Step-by-Step: How to Drain Safely at Home
- Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water for at least 30 seconds — or put on sterile gloves
- Prepare a clean, flat surface and lay out your Aspira drainage bag kit
- Expose the catheter valve site and check the dressing — if it looks wet, soiled, or lifted, change it before draining
- Remove the catheter valve cap using a clean technique — do not touch the tip
- Connect the Aspira drainage bag tubing to the catheter valve — press and twist until you feel or hear a click
- Open the flow clamp on the drainage bag tubing — fluid will begin flowing into the bag
- Drain slowly. Do not drain more than 1,000–1,500ml per session unless your doctor has specifically instructed otherwise
- When flow stops or you reach your limit, close the clamp and disconnect the bag
- Replace the valve cap and check the catheter site dressing
- Record the session: date, start time, volume drained, fluid color, and any symptoms
Warning: If fluid appears cloudy, dark red, or has an unusual odor — or if you develop fever, chills, or new chest pain — stop and call your care team before the next session.
